 The rate of unemployment in Nigeria is the highest-ever as the country reeled from two recessions in the last five years. Bloomberg has ranked Nigeria as second highest on the global list of the unemployment rate with an increase in the jobless rate as of the fourth quarter of 2020. According to a report released by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Africa’s most populous nation, with over 200 million population, had 27.1 percent employment rate as of Q2 2020 and had a surge to 33.3 percent in Q4. According to NBS, the underemployment rate saw a decrease from 28.6 per cent to 22.8 per cent, while a combination of both the unemployment and underemployment rate for the Q4 stood at 56.1 per cent.   Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics, SSANIP, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), chapter, has given the Rector, Mr. Obafemi Omokungbe, an engineer, two weeks to redress the situation, where teaching staff have taken over some positions meant for non-teaching staff as required by law. The workers, who held a congress on campus last Thursday, listed the positions for which their members have been denied to include the Director, CITM, the Director, Works and Services, the Director, Physical Planning Unit, the Director, Consult and the Head of Fire Services. In a communique at the end of their meeting which was signed by the Chairman, Mr. Kayode Adekunle Samuel and the Secretary, Mr. Odundayo Kolawole, they said a number of Federal Polytechnics had complied with the subsisting rules and regulations on filling such positions.
